How to make a simple table for two people

A simple table for two allows you to tell your story to, share a great dinner or just enjoy a game with another person on a fine intimate evening. I have been looking at this simple design at my favorite DIY woodworking website. It should be worth the effort to build this simple table for two.

What you need

The shopping list is pretty short, considering that there are plenty of parts to cut and then put together to make the table. The wood materials comprise the following: One 4′ x 8′ sheet of ¾” cabinet-grade plywood; Four 8′ lengths of 2×4 lumber; and 4/4 hardwood stock for plywood edging.

Attachment elements include PVA wood glue; 30 3/8″ wood plugs; 1″ finish nails. Wood screws are also needed, and their distribution is 14 3″ No. 8 wood screws; Six 2″ No. 8 wood screws; 10 2½” No. 8 wood screws; and 12 1¼” No. 8 wood screws.

 

Lumber supports

The 2 x 4 wood should be cross cut to size, then the dirty, cracked and rough factory edges trimmed off. The longest parts should be cut first, and these include the apron and stretcher. This helps make the most of the lumber. It is also much easier to work your way down to the shortest segments of the table, which are the uprights of the DIY furniture.

Holes are to be pre-drilled into each leg, then positioned ¾ inches from each edge. The legs are clamped to the cross-braces, then a 3-inch screw is driven into each hole.

Two mortises are then marked on the stretcher, with each mark being 1.75 inches deep and 1.5 inches wide, then placed 18 inches from each end. A relief hole is drilled in a corner. Using a jigsaw, a mortise is cut out.

Matching tenons 1.75 inches wide and 1.5 inches long should be cut in one end of each table upright. A table saw with a dado stack is used to slice out a ¾-inch deep by 3 ½-inch long rabbet on each table upright’s other end.

To create a half-lap joint, a matching rabbet should be cut on one end of each table support. Relief cuts can be made using a hand saw or miter saw if a dado stack is unavailable. Use a chisel to remove waste.

An inch down from the top edge, 45-degree cuts should be made on the other end of the pieces. The pieces are then glued together at right angles. Then, they are fastened via four 1.25-inch countersunk screws spaced evenly.

After applying glue to the tenons on the table uprights, they are inserted into the mortises of the stretcher. Using 3-inch countersunk screws, clamp and fasten them together. After attachment of the apron to this assembly, work on the plywood surfaces can commence.

 

Plywood surfaces

Using a circular saw, create angled cuts in the plywood blanks. To guide the saw and keep it straight, clamp a straightedge to your plywood.

⅜-inch strips can be ripped from the 4/4 hardwood stock for the edging. A hand saw or miter saw can be used for this task. The pieces can be overlapped or mitered at the corners, then glued and nailed into place. A router and a flush-trim bit are used to trim the excess when the glue dries.

Each bench is then fastened by clamping to the leg assembly. Three 2-inch screws are driven through the stretcher, right into the underside of the bench, taking care not to drive too deeply to prevent the tips from penetrating the surface of the bench.

Using 1.25-inch pocket screws, attach the plywood tabletop. After clamping a Kreg Jig to each table, support bore two holes inside each one.

 

Completing the table

A little glue should be applied to all visible countersunk holes, which are then plugged using ⅜-inch wood plugs. Gently tap the plugs in. Using a flush-cutting saw, trim the plugs flush after the glue dries.

Use 120-grit paper to sand the table smooth, followed by the 180-grit paper to refine the texture of the furniture. Put two coats of clear polyurethane. You should also sand using 220-grit paper between each coat application.

 

Why Having a Drill Press in Your Workshop Is a Good Idea

What kind of workshop doesn’t have a drill press? In my opinion, only a badly equipped workshop would make do without such an important piece of equipment. There are just so many situations that require you to drill holes, and performing this task by hand is simply not a good idea. Besides the fact that you will find yourself tired at the end of your project, you will be frustrated, too, since you will find the holes you drilled uneven and misplaced.

Nothing beats the accuracy of a drill press. This is what I am talking about. When it comes to precision drilling, it is impossible to beat a reliable drill press. You do not only need to drill holes that are at an equal distance from one another, but you need to make sure that the same width and depth are acquired. Without a drill press, I don’t see how such a thing would be possible.

 

Another thing I love about drill presses is that they are very fast at what they do. If you have ever tried to drill holes by hand, you surely know what a time-consuming process that is. Besides the fact that they are fast, they are accurate, as showed above, which means that you will no longer have to waste time with the usual precautions for a job well done. This is where drill presses excel compared to handheld devices.

 

Drill presses are powered by high-performance motors. There are simply projects where the use of a handheld drill is not recommended because the device does not have enough power. The leverage provided by the locking mechanism a drill press comes equipped with makes harnessing the motor power an even easier process. At the end of the day, you will be happy and less tired than you would when using a handheld drill. Now, the best power drill press is a serious investment, so I suggest doing a bit of research about the model you will buy. 

I think that having a drill press in your workshop is a fantastic idea because this type of tool allows you to drill angled holes. No other tool can help you achieve this kind of operation, so it goes without saying that your overall performance and ability to tackle projects is significantly improved.

In case you need to do more than simply drill holes, you will be happy to learn that drill presses are quite versatile and they can be used in combination with other tools, for other types of tasks. For instance, if you attach a rotary sanding disk to your drill press, you will be able to perform sanding tasks without a problem.

Do not forget that safety is paramount when you are working on your DIY projects. Drill presses come with safety features that will protect you while you are working.

 

 

 

How to build your own bar

I love having a cocktail once in a while especially if I get back home from a long and tiresome day spent at work. In most cases, I resort to a Martini or just a plain glass of red wine, but sometimes I like something fancier than that. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying that consuming alcohol is a good thing, but it definitely helps me unwind from time to time. Since I realize that drinking too much is bad, I make sure to stop after two drinks tops.

I’ve dreamed about having my own bar ever since I was a kid and used to watch movies with my dad. Do you remember those old films where the man walked into his living room and there was an amazing bar waiting for him whenever he needed it? I never had the money to get one right off the bat, meaning that I had to consider building it by myself.

I’m sure many men like me enjoy a bit of DIY-ing in the weekend. I bought several tools for my workshop and started working on several wood pieces without knowing that I was inadvertently preparing myself for the great moment when I would finally build a bar.

 

Something that I feel compelled to note is that you need to do your research on the matter and read as many articles as possible. Popular Mechanics has several posts devoted to the topic, so you might have to download the plans, print them, and study them to see whether they go with the space you might have in your mind for the bar per se. Home Wet Bar has also made an article available and it is absolutely exceptional. It actually presents eight easy steps that you can utilize to complete the project all by yourself. It might be more difficult for you to build a bar if you don’t have the proper tools, so make sure that you own at least one table or circular saw, a powered drill, sand paper, tape measure, masking tape, saw horses, a hammer, a torch, and protective equipment.

Depending on the size of your project, you might need extra tools and materials, but I can’t really recommend you anything considering that I don’t know the kind of bar you intend to build yourself. While the formerly mentioned resource can be used for putting together a solid bar that can withstand the test of time, it’s important to emphasize that it shouldn’t be used commercially and that it mostly addresses home users that might not use it hundreds and hundreds of times a day.
